Pest Control in London: Rats, Mice & Urban Wildlife

By Mark McCormickยท

A City Built for Pests

London's age, density, infrastructure, and sheer quantity of food waste make it one of the most pest-affected cities in Europe. The Victorian sewer system, canal network, underground railway, and millions of rubbish bags left on streets โ€” many boroughs have no wheelie bin provision โ€” create conditions that rats, mice, and insects thrive in.

Rats

Areas near the Thames โ€” Bankside, Bermondsey, Wapping, and along canal towpaths in Hackney and Camden โ€” have higher rat activity due to water access and harbourage in embankment infrastructure. The expansion of outdoor dining across Soho, Shoreditch, and Borough Market has also increased food availability.

Signs of Rats

  • Droppings โ€” dark, pellet-shaped, ten to fifteen millimetres long
  • Gnaw marks on bin bags, cable insulation, or woodwork
  • Burrow holes along fence lines or near compost bins
  • Greasy smear marks along walls where rats travel regularly

Contact a professional pest controller rather than using shop-bought poison. Indiscriminate rodenticide creates secondary poisoning risks for foxes and birds of prey. A qualified controller uses tamper-resistant bait stations monitored over two to four weeks.

Mice

House mice are arguably the bigger day-to-day problem for most Londoners. They squeeze through gaps as small as six millimetres, and London's housing stock is full of such gaps. Victorian terraces with suspended floors, gaps around pipework, and poorly sealed utility entry points are particularly vulnerable.

Activity peaks in autumn and winter. Modern blocks are not immune โ€” mice travel through service risers, cable ducts, and gaps around plumbing connecting multiple units.

The Proofing Approach

Trapping addresses existing mice but does not prevent new ones entering. The long-term solution is proofing โ€” sealing every entry point with steel wool, cement, or metal plate. Many London pest control companies now offer proofing combined with treatment.

Bedbugs

London has the highest bedbug prevalence in the UK, driven by population density, high tenant turnover, international travel, and the second-hand furniture market. The problem is acute in the private rental sector โ€” when a tenant moves out, bedbugs remain in mattresses, bed frames, skirting boards, and behind sockets.

Treatment

Professional heat treatment raises the room to fifty-six degrees, killing all life stages including eggs. This costs four hundred to eight hundred pounds per room. Chemical treatment is cheaper at one hundred and fifty to three hundred pounds but requires multiple visits over several weeks.

Foxes

An estimated ten thousand foxes live in Greater London, present in every borough. Croydon has one of the densest populations in the country. Foxes are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act. They can be deterred with motion-activated lights, removing food sources, and blocking access under decking and sheds.

Borough Council vs Private Pest Control

Most boroughs still offer some service, but provision has been cut significantly. Several now charge for previously free services, and waiting times can be two to three weeks. Private companies typically respond within twenty-four to forty-eight hours and offer more thorough treatment for persistent problems.

Typical Costs in London (2026)

  • Rat treatment (three-visit programme): one hundred and eighty to three hundred pounds
  • Mouse treatment with proofing: two hundred to four hundred pounds
  • Bedbug heat treatment per room: four hundred to eight hundred pounds
  • Wasp nest removal: sixty to one hundred and twenty pounds
  • Cockroach treatment: one hundred and fifty to three hundred and fifty pounds

London prices sit twenty to forty percent above the national average.

Prevention Basics

  • Store food in sealed containers, not open packets.
  • Fix dripping taps and pipes โ€” pests need water as much as food.
  • Seal gaps around pipes, cables, and where walls meet floors.
  • In boroughs using bags rather than bins, double-bag food waste.
  • If you live in a flat, coordinate treatment with neighbours. A pest problem in one unit almost always affects adjacent units.
